Maya Kominsky graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in American Studies and a minor in English. Her work focuses on media for young women and the intersections between gender, race, sexuality, and age. Formerly the Executive Editor for Arts & Culture at the student publication The Georgetown Voice, she writes and edits cultural commentary and criticism of music, film, and television. She also publishes an email newsletter entitled Tuned In about trends in music and Gen-Z culture.

Her undergraduate thesis examined portrayals of women’s bodies in Gothic literature that depicts them as monsters. She used her findings to analyze the TV series The Vampire Diaries (2009–17), demonstrating how the show positions female monstrosity as a source of agency for teen girls.
